PE

Intent

At Weedon Bec Primary School, we believe that Physical Education is more than improving a child’s individual sporting skill level. PE is the perfect tool to develop the child as a whole. We want our children to be the best that they can be allied with an increasing degree of self-belief that each child can achieve anything, displaying passion for something that each individual holds close to them, whilst also understanding what it takes to achieve their aims. In short, we want each and every child to understand that their own wonder, belief and passion culminates in personal success.

Our curriculum aims to enable, develop and challenge children’s abilities in a range of physical activities and sports.

We aim to help children to develop their personal fitness and a healthy sense of competition and also learn important life skills such as communication, teamwork, leadership, organisation, honesty, perseverance, resilience and fair play through the disciplines and British Values that PE promotes.

Implementation

PE is taught across the school, with each class receiving two sessions that are an hour in duration, meeting the requirements of the National Curriculum. A long-term PE Curriculum Plan is being used during the 2023-2024 academic year, outlining sports and activities that are to be delivered. Each class completes one Real PE lesson per week which focusses on the development of agility, balance and coordination, healthy competition and cooperative learning. One unit of REAL PE is covered per term: creativity, cognitive skills, health and fitness, physical skills, social and personal skills. The other lesson is based on developing team games, focusing on attacking and defending, dance and gymnastics.

The long-term plan sets out the PE units which are to be taught throughout the year and ensures that the requirements of the National Curriculum are fully met.

Each year, a group of Year 6 children are invited to become a member of the 'Sports Crew'. They develop into sporting role models for the younger children, running active playground games at lunchtimes and assisting with the running of our sports day at the end of the year.

All of our PE lessons are taught by an experienced sports coach or experienced teachers.
Our lessons ensure that children:

  • Have fun and experience success in sport
  • Feel challenged and can develop their own challenges.
  • Develop good sporting attitudes
  • Understanding the basic rules of different sports.
  • Experience positive and healthy competition
  • Learning in a safe environment
  • Have a foundation for lifelong physical activity, leaving primary school as physically active.
  • Have the opportunity to become leaders.

We provide opportunities for children to compete in many different sports throughout the year. We promote the School Game Values :

  • Passion
  • Self-Belief
  • Respect
  • Honesty
  • Determination
  • Teamwork

Our children are recognised and rewarded for demonstrating these values.

Children across the school, especially in Key Stage Two, are given the opportunity to take part in internal and external competitions as part of our subscription to the local school sports partnership. KS1 has the opportunity to experience and attend skills festivals in a variety of different sports, so they are prepared for KS2.

PE and sporting activities are inclusive at Weedon, where every child has the opportunity to perform and compete. We enter as many SEND events as possible and aim to take the maximum number of children to each event in order to provide opportunities for all.

External coaches, local clubs and organisations and experienced teaching staff support the PE curriculum and enrich the pupil’s sporting experience.

Impact

PE is taught as a basis for lifelong learning, where children have access to a wide range of activities in the belief that if taught well and the children are allowed to succeed, then they will continue to have a physically active life.

Pre- and post-assessments within each sport specific unit of PE are tracked across the school; these results will highlight the progression made as children move throughout the school.

A high-quality physical education curriculum inspires all children to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically-demanding activities. We should see an overall increase in the volume of students involved in extracurricular activities. As a direct result of these measures, we also aim to achieve the Gold School Games Mark for 2024-2025.
